Andrew Garfield Defines His Religion as 'Mostly Confused'

Andrew Garfield is opening up about his spiritual beliefs.

In his latest film Silence, the 33-year-old actor and his co-star Adam Driver play Jesuit priests who face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and propagate Christianity in the seventeenth century.

In real life, however, Andrew says he can’t put a single label on his faith.

“I’m not a Christian person,” Andrew told The Hollywood Reporter. “I consider myself pantheist, agnostic, occasionally atheist, and a little bit Jewish, but mostly confused.”

“It was a year that I spent with this one particular Jesuit priest, Father James Martin, who was a consultant on the film and has become a dear friend and my spiritual director in a very surreal way,” Andrew added. “It’s the thing that transcends simply making a film.”

Silence hits limited theaters on December 23 and opens nationwide in January – watch the latest trailer here!

Andrew Garfield Says Spider-Man Was His Favorite Superhero

Andrew Garfield continues to open up about the disappointment he had in his Spider-Man films.

The 33-year-old actor admits that he idolized the superhero as a kid.

Spider-Man was my favorite superhero, my first superhero costume when I was a 3-year-old at Halloween,” Andrew told THR.

He added about the movies, “I was like, there’s millions of young people watching who are hungry for someone to say, ‘You’re OK. You’re seen very deeply.’ And more often than not the opportunity is not taken, and it is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking because there is so much medicine that could be delivered through those films.”

Adam Driver Puts Muscles on Display for 'Interview' Spread

Adam Driver gives a peek at his muscular body on the cover of Interview magazine’s December/January cover.

Here’s what the 33-year-old actor had to share:

On the director/actor relationship: “I always found something strangely paternal about the director-actor relationship. Actors want so much approval. And I’m looking to you to tell me it’s good. I want you to be happy and like it all. But at some point, I distrust you, like, ‘Well, they don’t know me as well as I know myself. I know my potential. If it’s not good, then I have to fight to make it better.’ And I start distrusting everybody because you’re insecure. So I start to rebel against what’s happening, to kind of shock my system a bit. Not rebel like I don’t show up on time or I show up drunk or something … Now we’re never going to work together again. [both laugh] It’s just a way to take ownership of it for myself.”

On seeing kids dress as Kylo Ren: “I was dropping my wife off outside our building and I saw this mom holding a lightsaber—like, my lightsaber— and scarily accurate. Like, life-size. And she was handling it like she’s handled it a million times. She was juggling four kids who were all running in different directions, and she had three different bags and this lightsaber. Suddenly, the things that are great about this job came into full focus.
”

On working with Martin Scorsese in Silence: “He hires you for your ideas and wants you to take ownership of it. It’s really inspiring to work with someone who’s accomplished so much and is the tip of the pyramid and is still turning to you and wants your ideas and opinions.”

Adam Driver Lost 50 Pounds for 'Silence,' Reveals How He Did It

The trailer for Adam Driver‘s upcoming movie Silence was released this past week and something you might notice is how he looks incredibly skinny in the film.

The 33-year-old actor, who played Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, lost 50 pounds for his role in Martin Scorsese‘s new movie.

Adam told The Telegraph that he lost 30 pounds before filming started and another 20 during the shoot.

“It made sense: we were playing Jesuit priests in the 17th century who were starved and beaten. But it was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, just because of the physical toll it takes on you,” Adam said last year. “Sometimes you would show up to do scenes and all you had energy for was just to listen and respond. But then sometimes a scene wasn’t working and you’re like, ‘I have no idea how to figure this out!’ Plus you’re waking up three times a night to go to the bathroom because you’re taking all these water pills to drop weight.”

Adam said that he had to begin filming Girls again just three weeks after Silence wrapped!

“The first time I had a scoop of peanut butter, I could literally feel my brain turn on. Suddenly you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I can think again!’” he said.
