Jennifer Hudson Responds to Tony Nomination 2016 Snub: 'My Presence Was Used for My Celebrity, Not My Talent'

Jennifer Hudson is responding to her nomination snub from the 2016 Tony Awards for her performance in The Color Purple, one of the biggest hits on Broadway this season.

A fan tweeted at the Oscar-winning actress, “Ultimate snub of @IAMJHUD for the #TonyAwards. Her performance was great for it being her first time in Broadway.”

Jennifer responded, “my presence was used for my celebrity , not my talent . I’m not surprised.” She also added, “thank u anyway.”

Jennifer‘s co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks were both nominated in the leading actress and featured actress categories, respectively. “Very proud and overwhelmed to say congrats to @cynthiaerivo @daniebb3 @color purple entire cast on tony nod ! One hell of a cast that’s for sure ! Proud of u all!,” Jennifer wrote on Instagram.

Bitter. She’d never win her category anyway tbh

I was surprised she didn’t get nominated. She’s gotten huge kudo’s from everyone for her role.

The Tony people don’t really like Celebs in other areas of entertainment entering their domain. If she wants Tony cred she’ll have to do a few more shows

They already have one celebrated black actress getting recognition at the Tonys (Lupita) so they weren’t going to add Jennifer. Plus you have the play Hamilton getting nods…no the Tonys were not going to become a black nite affair.

That is ridiculous. You really think that that was their thought process? Not to mention, Sophie Okonedo is a celebrated actress. Previous winner and an Oscar nominee. What’s your excuse for them nominating her and snubbing her white co-stars?

  • Visitor

Funny, her two co-stars (in the pic beside hers) were nominated.

Is she implying that she got the role in The Color Purple because of her celebrity?

    She can’t act anyway!
